We begin our beautiful journey of admiring the beauties that Agios Nikolaos and Elounda can offer us. First, we make a stop at the historic monastery of Agios Georgios in Selinari. We visit the historic church of the monastery and see the “cells” where the monks live while enjoying the magnificent view. Arriving at Agios Nikolaos we can admire from above the famous lake of the city and take a walk in its beautiful alleys. Our next stop is Elounda. One of the most beautiful places in Greece. It is no coincidence that some of the best hotels in Europe can be found here. Just outside Elounda is Plaka, a small and beautiful fishing village. From there you will be directly transported to the island of Spinalonga. In Venetian times it was the most important fortress of eastern Crete. At the beginning of the 20th century, it had become a sanatorium for lepers, until the cure was discovered in the 60’s. In the last two decades it has become one of the most popular places to visit.

On our way to the Lassithi plateau, we make our first stop at the historic monastery of Panagia Kera which dates from the 14th century and is considered a miracle worker. Arriving at the plateau you will be impressed by the unique beauty offered by the valley with its countless windmills. They were previously used by the locals to draw water from the wells so they could irrigate their fields. Next stop in the village of Psychro where we will visit the Diktaion Cave, otherwise known as the Cave of Zeus. It’s an impressive cave where according to mythology, Titan Rea gave birth to Zeus, the king of the gods. On our way back, we will stop at the village of Krasi, where the largest plane tree in Greece dominates its square. It is estimated that it is 2400 years old. In its shade, you can enjoy traditional Greek coffee.

We start our trip with a visit to the largest and most important palace of King Minos, Knossos. Our second destination is a visit to a traditional winery. There you can learn how Cretan wines are made, in the same way that the Minoans made them 4000 years ago. You can also try different varieties of wines and purchase whichever ones you like. The next stop is the traditional village of Archanes. A village was built at the foot of Mount Giouchtas. You’ll walk in the narrow alleys and admire the architecture of the old houses, drink some coffee in the cafes of the village, or try raki, the traditional drink of Crete.

Before going to our first destination, which is Knossos, we will make two stops. Initially, we are going to stop at the hill of Kallithea, where we can admire the beautiful panoramic view of the city of Heraklion.
Our second stop is in a beautiful country place. From there you can get a first taste of the architecture left behind by the cultures that have passed through the island of Crete. The visit to Knossos lasts about an hour and our guide will be waiting for you in the parking lot. Leaving Knossos, we will return to the city using the same road that has been used by Cretans for a hundred years.
The old town of Heraklion is surrounded by the largest fortification project in the Mediterranean countries built by the Venetians, the Venetian walls of Heraklion. Inside the city, we will visit beautiful historical monuments. The cathedral of Agios Minas, the Lions Square, the tomb of Kazantzakis, the old Venetian port that dominates the fortress of Koule and the old traditional market. Finally, a visit to the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion will take you on a journey back five thousand years.

Driving to the South coast of Crete, our first stop is in the ancient city of Gortyna. Its history begins in 3000 BC. It flourished in the Minoan years and was the capital in Roman times. In the area of ​​Gortyna, you can admire the famous plane tree of Zeus where according to mythology Europe got pregnant by Zeus with her three sons. Sarpidon, Rodamanthos and Minos who later ruled Crete. The next stop is the palace of Phaistos. The second most important palace of King Minos. It is the place where archaeologists discovered the famous disk of Phaistos, which even today remains a mystery. Matala does not need special recommendations. It is the place where the children of Flowers gathered, in the 60’s. There you will see and visit the caves on the rocks where the hippies lived.
On our return, we will drive from the old road where we pass through many small traditional villages. One of them will be our last stop. Specifically, in the village of Zaros which is built at the foot of Psiloritis, the highest mountain in Crete. There you can enjoy your coffee in the famous lake of the village. As the snow melts from the mountains, water runs all year round and creates a very beautiful and special atmosphere.
